Your Municipality, Your Development, Our Responsibility.
Towards a Clean, Green & Progressive Mathabhanga.
Serving Citizens with Transparency & Commitment.
Mathabhanga is not just a town, it is a story of heritage, resilience, and progress. Nestled in the northern part of Cooch Behar district, on the banks of the Jaldhaka River, Mathabhanga has always been known as a place where nature and history meet. The name itself—“Mathabhanga”—is said to have come from the ancient river course changes, or bhangon, that shaped its land and gave it a unique geographical character.
To meet the needs of a growing population and to provide proper civic amenities, Mathabhanga Municipality was formally established in 1903 during the princely era of Cooch Behar. Back then, the town was small but buzzing with agricultural trade, local markets, and educational institutions. The Municipality began its journey with only a few wards, focusing on the basics—cleaning roads, providing drinking water, and maintaining public order.
As years passed, Mathabhanga expanded steadily, and so did its governance. Today, the Municipality proudly administers 12 wards, each represented by elected councilors. This system ensures that the voice of every locality is heard and people’s issues are addressed at the grassroots level. The growth of wards reflects not just administrative expansion, but the story of a community that has continued to flourish with unity and determination.
Mathabhanga is deeply connected to the rich cultural and political history of the Cooch Behar kingdom. Being close to the royal capital, it has witnessed the influence of the Maharajas of Cooch Behar, whose legacy can still be felt in the traditions and festivals of the region. The town is also surrounded by temples, old markets, and heritage spots that remind us of its glorious past. Over time, Mathabhanga has become a vibrant melting pot of communities—Hindus, Muslims, Rajbanshis, and others—who live here in harmony and contribute to its cultural mosaic.
Modern Mathabhanga is a blend of history and progress. While the narrow lanes and old neighborhoods remind us of its traditional past, new roads, bridges, educational institutions, and healthcare facilities point towards a brighter future. The town has developed into an important sub-divisional headquarters, serving as a hub for administration, business, and culture in North Bengal.
The journey of Mathabhanga Municipality has always been about people, service, and growth. Today, with the adoption of digital initiatives and e-Governance, services have become more transparent and accessible. The Municipality envisions a future where Mathabhanga is recognized as a model town—clean, green, modern, and sustainable—while staying true to its cultural roots.
We believe that the progress of a town is not measured only by its buildings and roads, but by the happiness, health, and participation of its people. With this vision, Mathabhanga Municipality continues to serve its citizens with dedication and pride.
